What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative Justice (RJ) involves communication between offenders and the victim of the crime they committed. Communications can take place:

  • in person
  • on a video call
  • using video recordings
  • by writing letters.

Whichever method is chosen, a specially trained facilitator will be involved. They make sure that the communications are safe and helpful.

RJ gives you the chance to tell the offender how the crime has affected your life. You may also have questions for the offender about their circumstances and why they committed the crime.

RJ is completely voluntary, and we understand that it isn’t right for everyone.

How it could help

As a victim of crime, RJ can help you to:

  • express your feelings at a time when you might not feel listened to
  • have a safe space to communicate or meet with the person who caused you harm
  • explain the harm you’ve experienced, to the person who caused it
  • get answers to any questions you may have about the offence
  • move forward from the impact of crime.
