Restorative justice

Restorative justice is a process that brings together victims and offenders to communicate and address the impact of the crime. The aim is to empower victims by giving them a voice and to help offenders address the harm they’ve caused.

Both the victim and offender must willingly accept to participate. The process focusses on creating a safe and controlled environment for victims.

It’s completely the victim’s choice if they want to take part. The victim will also be asked how they would prefer to communicate with the offender. They can choose to communicate face-to-face or through writing letters, for example. Victims can also choose to withdraw from the process at any time.

For offenders, this process can help them understand the real impact of their crime, take responsibility and have the opportunity to make amends.

Restorative justice sessions will always be facilitated by a trained facilitator who will assess the suitability and create a controlled and safe environment.
