Court-awarded compensation

The court may decide that the offender should pay compensation directly to the victim. This is called a compensation order and can be either given as a sentence on its own or in addition to another sentence. The amount is decided by the court and the court takes into account the offender’s financial situation.

This compensation can cover various damages such as:

  • personal injury
  • emotional distress
  • theft or property damage
  • financial losses
  • medical expenses
  • travel expenses.

The payments will be made to the court and then passed on to the victim. There should be no direct contact between the victim and the offender. It’s also the court’s responsibility to enforce the payment of the compensation order.
